Nestled between the Indian Ocean and the Swan river, this unique property offers the perfect lifestyle. The fabulous bespoke house is constructed across multiple levels, with three pavilion style sections tumbling down the hill, connected by steps and with a bridge overlooking the plunge pool.
The current owners of 27 Ainslie Road provide an insight into the property;
“We have previously lived in an apartment very close to the house we built in North Fremantle, and though we planned to move we were looking to stay in the same area. At the time, we were training for a challenging hike along the historic Kokoda Trail used by Australian solders in Papua Guinea in WW11. This was the perfect training hill, very steep and with pleasant views across North Fremantle. When we saw there was a block available here, in the original market garden of a heritage house, we said yes right away!”
“We employed lots of natural materials in the house, from the stabilised earth which forms the thick walls, to high vaulted timber ceilings, a stone fireplace and polished concrete floors. Huge sliding Austrian windows in all three pavilions bring the outside indoors, creating a light airy space.”
“Building on such a steep block had its own challenges,” the owners continue, “but the problems presented by the slope of the land provided us with a unique home designed to fit its surroundings.
The location of the property has much to recommend it, too. “The house is situated in the popular suburb of North Fremantle,” say the owners, “with a wealth of varied architecture, from heritage houses and old workers’ cottages to new prominent waterside homes. Just a few metres down the hill is the Swan River, while less than a kilometre in the other direction is the Indian Ocean and its beautiful beaches. Schools and amenities in the area are excellent, and also in close proximity.”
Favourite room
“On the top level of the house is our open plan living and dining area, with huge windows looking across to the street and allowing the light to flood in. The beautiful stone fireplace with gas fire makes the room very cosy, while the polished concrete floor and timber ceiling create a feeling of warmth.”
Best thing about the grounds
“The bridge from the top level of the house to the street is a wonderfully unique feature, creating both a sense of distance from and connection to the road.”
Memorable event
“The house is ideal for family gatherings with its open concept layout and attractive design. Our grandchildren particularly love the plunge pool in the heat of summer!”
