“We employed lots of natural materials in the house, from the stabilised earth which forms the thick walls, to high vaulted timber ceilings, a stone fireplace and polished concrete floors. Huge sliding Austrian windows in all three pavilions bring the outside indoors, creating a light airy space.”

“Building on such a steep block had its own challenges,” the owners continue, “but the problems presented by the slope of the land provided us with a unique home designed to fit its surroundings.

The location of the property has much to recommend it, too. “The house is situated in the popular suburb of North Fremantle,” say the owners, “with a wealth of varied architecture, from heritage houses and old workers’ cottages to new prominent waterside homes. Just a few metres down the hill is the Swan River, while less than a kilometre in the other direction is the Indian Ocean and its beautiful beaches. Schools and amenities in the area are excellent, and also in close proximity.”

“On the top level of the house is our open plan living and dining area, with huge windows looking across to the street and allowing the light to flood in. The beautiful stone fireplace with gas fire makes the room very cosy, while the polished concrete floor and timber ceiling create a feeling of warmth.”
