Young British People Moving To Spain

A European platform aimed at property buyers from the UK claims there was a 446% increase in young British residents viewing Spanish property on its site.

People aged between 18 and 24 spent time reviewing property, and it looks as though a generation of people are keen to flee the country and set up life in sunny Spain. You can hardly blame them!

Martin Dell, founder of Kyero.com said: “A new, younger generation of ‘corona nomads’ are embracing a move to Spain. With no office job, mortgage or family responsibilities to tie them down – as well as no prospect of getting on the UK housing ladder – an increasing number of young British people are considering buying property abroad in Spain. While we’ve seen increased interest in Spanish properties from younger people of all nationalities over the last year (up 111 per cent in 2020 compared to 2019) it was British interest that really skyrocketed (up 446 per cent), suggesting that Brexit is a key factor.”

Young people want to retain freedom

Martin Dell continued by saying; “Many young people don’t want to lose their freedom of movement across Europe, and by becoming Spanish residents, they re-gain their pre-Brexit rights as EU citizens. There is little doubt that coronavirus and higher levels of remote working has driven up interest in property overseas as the dream of moving to Europe becomes a realistic possibility. And it also appears that many young people disillusioned by Brexit are searching for a European lifestyle in the sun.”

Martin Dell also spoke about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and how this has affected property buyers. He said; “Because of the surge in remote working, people can often base themselves anywhere for longer periods these days, making more remote and often cheaper areas of Spain increasingly viable – and therefore popular – options. Combined with Spain’s already affordable property prices, it’s a very attractive option for young UK buyers.”

There is no denying Spain will remain a popular destination for many people in the UK. The country is well connected, internationally and internally, and there is dependable internet connections.

Remote working will provide opportunities and challenges

With remote working becoming a key factor in modern life, there is the suggestion many people are looking to base themselves abroad while continuing to work in the UK.

The legalities of such a move is something to ponder, and of course, Brexit is hardly going to simplify the process.

However, with another lockdown period initiated at the start of January, which looks as though it might run through until March (at least), it is easy to see why some people are looking for a way out of the country.

Moving to Spain may just be a daydream for some people, but for others, it is set to be a way to improve their life, and provide them with greater purpose.

In these difficult times, a lot of people are looking for advice or guidance. It is imperative people follow official guidance, but when it comes to property market matters, it is helpful to speak with a skilled and experienced professional. At Ideal, we aim to provide all homeowners with guidance and support should they require any information about the Spanish property market.
