SPANISH DESIGN

Spanish interior design often combines vibrant colours, rustic design, a mixture of old and new and different textures and materials in order to create spaces so typical for Spain: rustic villas, sunny patios and open spaces for family gatherings.
Using Mediterranean colours, traditional tiles and the right accessories can transform a room completely.
Older Spanish buildings often have naturally textured walls. Alternatively, this effect can be created by using technical brush strokes or sponge patterns when decorating. Mediterranean colours include warm and cool colours such as taupe, a dark orange, a warm brown or deep red and yellows.

Spanish interiors rarely feature carpet but rather boast gorgeous, uniform hard wood flooring. Floor-covering or small rugs are used as accent pieces. Colours for rugs and flooring are soft and subtle and floors are usually solid wood.
The Spanish love accessories and accents including fabrics and tapestries, wrought iron and pottery. The country is an extremely artistic society and interior design definitely reflects this. Details are an important part of Spanish design. This includes everything from window treatments, door handles, vases, shelves and other accents. It is not uncommon to see a variation of textures, fabrics and styles in one room, from cotton rugs to textured groupings of pottery.
Dark furniture is a strong Spanish characteristic. Distressed wood furnishings are common including mahogany, walnut, ebony, butternut, teak and rosewood. This dark furniture provides a nice harsh contrast to soft arches and loud architecture. The colors used in the accents tie the rooms together, but furniture tends to be understated and relatively simple. Heavy benches and upholstered pieces for living areas and a large amount of seating as the Spanish love to host family and friends for meals and gatherings.
Azulejos were introduced to Spain (and other European countries) thanks to the Arabs. These often very colourful tiles can be used on walls, floors, ceilings, furniture surfaces or simply as decoration objects.
