At one time, prior to 1949, the Johannesburg suburb now known as Bryanston was largely a semi-rural area (not a suburb). Many Bryanston residents kept horses on their residential properties, since space was that plentiful.

However, way back then, the Bryanston area seemed rather far removed from the city and its CBD, where most companies that offered employment were located.

Although there was comparatively little traffic when compared with later years, the workday commute to the city still took a while, because there were no freeways in South Africa and certainly not to and from Bryanston, where one travelled on dirt roads. None in the area were tarred.

Despite these early potential drawbacks, properties offered for sale in Bryanston were snapped up – a trend which still continues today.

For many years, all serious shopping had to be done in Johannesburg’s CBD, usually at multi-storey department stores, where everything from footwear to fashions and kitchen ware could be found, and all under one roof.

Ladies of the day dressed up quite formally to go shopping in Johannesburg. It was customary to complete one’s outfit with a colour co-ordinated hat and gloves when on a shopping excursion, an activity which typically lasted an entire day, with pauses for tea and lunch in the restaurant department of a large store.

No major stores existed in suburbs like Bryanston, despite the fact that it was already regarded as an affluent area, even in those early days. Shopping malls had yet to be invented. At best, suburbs like Bryanston may have included a general dealer or a grocer, where dry goods were weighed to customers’ orders, a café and perhaps a post office.

Constants and changes

Some features of modern-day Bryanston and its properties have remained constant from the days when it was a rural area to when it became a suburb of Sandton in 1969, while other aspects have changed considerably – and for the better, one must say.

Although Bryanston retains its green, leafy and peaceful atmosphere, the amenities and infrastructure of the suburb are modern and of world class. Very few current residents will recall once driving on dirt roads in Bryanston.

Properties on sale attain good prices, while still as always, representing excellent value, both in terms of being sound investments, as well as offering the excellent gracious and easy-living lifestyle expected in an upmarket, sought-after area.

Shoppers no longer need to travel far to make any and every type of purchase. Various shopping centres and malls are located in and close to Bryanston. Sandton City, the so-called “richest square mile in Africa” is easily accessible, whilst Fourways Mall is just down the road.

Since its establishment, Sandton City has undergone a number of extensions and refurbishments. Currently, Fourways Mall is being enlarged and revamped, and it is said that this suburban centre will be the fifth largest of its kind in Africa, once it’s completed.

Just about every facility you care to mention is on your doorstep if you reside in Bryanston. The list includes corporate head offices, media houses, office parks, excellent schools, sports and leisure activities, and a host and variety of entertainment venues.
