Stunning golf-themed investment properties in Stellenbosch
If you invested in property in Stellenbosch a few decades ago, when golf estates were unheard of or were very new in South Africa, you would be sitting pretty today. On the other hand, perhaps you did not recognise the superb investment value in Stellenbosch properties some time ago, or you weren’t in a position to acquire property in this charming and picturesque old (by South African standards) university town.
Be that as it may, it’s never too late to make a property investment in “die Eikestad” – the City of Oaks, so named because the streets and parks of Stellenbosch are lined with oak trees, many of them old, all of them large and shading the streets beneath with lush canopies of green all summer long. The sooner you buy property here in this second oldest South African town, the better your investment growth will be.
While no one can guarantee premium investment results in any product, Stellenbosch property values have performed so well that they may be referred to as sure-fire investments that have outperformed many other prime investment properties in many other places. There are no signs that this remarkable trend is likely to reverse, slow down, or drop off, not in Stellenbosch.
First designated Stellenbosch agricultural properties
After being appointed as the Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel established Stellenbosch in 1679, when he and the party of men who accompanied him to further explore the Cape region came upon a beautiful valley surrounded by picturesque towering mountains, one of which is known as Simonsberg. Van der Stel was correctly of the opinion that this area would be suitable for agriculture.
Since the supply of fresh water and produce to passing ships was fundamental in Dutch occupation of the Cape from 1652, van der Stel established his additional agricultural settlement, which he named Stellenbosch,( [van der] Stel’s Bush). It’s interesting to note that first-rate, arable agricultural property, fairly flat with rich soil, is also eminently suitable for the layout of golf courses, a much later addition to the Stellenbosch landscape.
Golf clubs, golf courses and golf estates
Today’s Stellenbosch offers a great deal in addition to its university, still including yet extending way beyond academia, viticulture, and world-famous wines, history, and heritage, all the way to the great game of golf, golf clubs, golf courses, and contemporary golf estates, which have played a significant role in creating property value escalation, a trend which is set to continue well into the future.
Almost everyone wants to live in the Cape region, Stellenbosch included – within or near Stellenbosch’s world class golf courses, which are simply breathtaking in the beauty of their unique locations. The game of golf is has its origins in Scotland in about 1457, surprisingly early and some two centuries before the Dutch settled in the Cape and Stellenbosch. Here are some of the great golfing establishments in the Stellenbosch area:
- Stellenbosch Golf Club – established in 1904, this is the fourth oldest golf club in South Africa. It was extended from a 9 hole course to 18 holes in 1953.
- De Zalze Golf Club and Estate – a glorious dual golfing facility for club members and residents of the prestigious golfing lifestyle estate, which retains some historical buildings that date back to 1838.
- Devonvale Golf & Wine Estate – only 8 km from central Stellenbosch in an outstandingly beautiful setting amidst rolling hectares of vineyards.
- Erinvale Country & Golf Estate – a top 5-star residential, lifestyle, and golf estate, exceptionally attractive to local and international investment property buyers, and offering vistas of Helderberg, the Hottentot Holland Mountains, False Bay, and vineyards
There are numerous other golf courses, clubs, and estates that are relatively close to Stellenbosch and the major towns on the wine routes, so we at Fine & Country South Africa, your estate agency of choice for high-end investment properties, have only touched on a few of them, but look forward to telling you more about the exceptional property investment opportunities in the area.
