Luxury Property Constantia | Experts in Luxury Property Services

Lovely, luxury property services in an area named Constantia

What’s in a name? In this instance, we’re not referring to a rose by any other name, but rather to Constantia in Cape Town. “Constantia” certainly does have a grand ring to it, doesn’t it?

Constantia is one of the Mother City’s premier suburbs, featuring stunningly breathtaking, luxury properties and an aspirational lifestyle to match, all situated in an area about which many only dream to live. If you want to live truly well in the Cape, you want to consider living in Constantia.

There’s no doubt that Constantia is likely to appear on your property viewing list when you engage our professional property sales and/or home search assistance at Fine & Country South Africa.

Historical origins

Perhaps one’s (completely accurate) perception of Constantia as an iconic area is because of its association with Groot Constantia, the heart and origin of South Africa’s wine making industry, in addition to producing world-acclaimed wines to this very day.

The Cape and Constantia’s first wine producer, Governor Simon van der Stel of the Dutch VOC, arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1670. Van der Stel was granted land in an area that was to become known as Constantia Valley, after he named his farm “Constantia”.

One theory suggests that he named his farm thus, after the daughter of one Commissioner Van Goens, to honour him when Van Goens apparently assisted him in his land acquisition.

It has also been claimed that van der Stel chose his farm’s name more randomly, naming it after a ship “Constantia”, which was docked in the harbour of the Cape of Good Hope. The Cape of Good Hope was previously called the Cape of Storms in 1488, so named by the Cape’s discoverer, Bartolomeo Dias, the intrepid Portuguese explorer and seafarer.

Nevertheless, most people gladly pay their levies for the pleasure of living in a lovely, well-maintained, professionally managed and solvent estate in which property values continue to increase, as does the demand for estate houses.

The Cape had another name too, a lesser known fact, but equally interesting. It was once referred to as “The Tavern of the Seas”, because of the Cape’s function as a halfway station and harbour where ships en route to the East could take on fresh food, water and provisions. No one knows for certain whether any early Constantia wines were ever taken on board.
