Every year, southern right whales travel to the ocean waters off the Garden Route’s bays to produce their young in relative safety. Whale watching is an enduring, favourite pastime along the route. Coastal marine reserves also feature unique life forms –  dolphins, seals, and the delicate Knysna seahorse that has chosen the lagoons of the Eastern Cape as its habitat.

 

The Garden Route is famous for its collection of hiking and walking trails. Some of these, particularly the Otter Trail, are regularly fully booked for more than a year in advance, because of their popularity that’s based on the unparalleled beauty of the surrounding scenery and panoramic views across the sea. Water sports, bird watching, and golfing are other popular leisure pursuits along the Garden Route.

 

Towns, villages and settlements along the route include Witsand, Still Bay, Vleesbaai, Mossel Bay, Glentana, Herolds Bay, Victoria Bay, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Buffalo Bay, Brenton-on-Sea, Knoetzie, Plettenberg Bay, Keurboomstrand, Nature’s Valley, and Knysna. George is the administrative capital of the Garden Route and is situated a little way inland from the coastline.
