Pretoria was the capital city of the Transvaal, while Johannesburg was fast becoming a business and commercial centre, largely due to the discovery of gold in and around Johannesburg and a little further afield on the Witwatersrand.

A break in travellers’ journeys allowed travellers to disembark, stretch their legs, and take refreshments. At the same time, their oxen, horses, and other draught animals were afforded the opportunity to have a drink and rest a while, before resuming their journey.

Nowadays, the trip between Pretoria and Johannesburg is a mere 58 km by highway, taking less than an hour on average when the roads are not busy, but it must’ve been considerably further and longer in those distant days when the route was a mere bumpy wagon track through the dusty veld. Now, Midrand has a Gautrain station, which is situated on the R101 on the fringe of the city, close to the Grand Central Airport.
