There’s very little information available about Morningside’s history, bar the fact that it was established in 1950, after initially being located on an erstwhile farm that went by the name of Zandfontein (a fountain situated in sand or sandy soil). Like Morningside, the area that was to become Sandton once consisted of farmlands, followed by smallholdings or plots, as South Africans liked to refer to the latter small agricultural holdings. Even during the latter part of the 1960s, the Sandton area had no shopping facilities or much other urban infrastructure of which to speak of. Rosebank was the closest commercial centre to the Sandton area.
Instead, it was favoured by residents who were relatively comfortable financially, preferred to live in the country and commute to work in the city (Johannesburg), and enjoyed a semi-rural lifestyle – typically the so-called “horsey” or “mink and manure” set.
