Halfway House by a newer name – Midrand

Midrand, formerly Halfway House, has developed by leaps and bounds since being established as a municipality in the early 1980s, and more so after its incorporation into the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality almost 20 years later in 2000. Nowadays, the new developments in Midrand – residential, commercial, and industrial – continue at a remarkably rapid rate.

Pre-Midrand Halfway House heydays

Because time and trends pass so quickly, it’s almost only the baby boomers and in part, their immediate descendants, that fondly remember the Halfway House of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s – the pre-Midrand heydays of Halfway House. Then, there was a long established Halfway House Hotel, which provided the local population with a watering hole at which to socialise. 

Presidential presence

When President Paul Kruger was in office, he reputedly stopped over at the hotel to rest during his travels between Pretoria and Johannesburg. The location of Halfway House made this small settlement ideal for rest stops, where coach passengers could stretch their legs, obtain refreshments or a meal, and find a bed for the night, as well as replenish their team of horses or mules with which to continue the journey – a far cry from today’s trip of less than an hour, along a state-of-the-art highway that passes through Midrand.

Seeing snakes and dining on a train

More recently though, in the baby boomers’ lifespan, the Transvaal Snake Park in Halfway House was another new development and great attraction – a favourite with day-tripping families on weekends. Long gone now, there was The Train Restaurant in Halfway House, situated in a stationary train coach, mounted on a short set of rails that led nowhere.

This popular, iconic restaurant specialised in serving various types of venison and game dishes in a buffet style, which allowed patrons to sample small portions of an enormous variety of unusual meats – crocodile tail steaks, warthog sausage, antelope carpaccio, various cuts of ostrich, elephant, giraffe, and such.

The new development trend continues

Although these memorable and historical landmarks are gone now, the latest new developments in Midrand are also exceptionally attractive to residents, commuters, businesses, visitors, property investors, and additional developers. Midrand and its new developments have been booming and everything points to an unabated continuation of this trend.

Since the establishment of an enormous, amazingly beautiful Turkish-styled mosque and the massive Mall of Africa retail and entertainment development (thus far Africa’s most expansive single-phase shopping mall), the demand for and supply of new developments in Midrand have increased exponentially.
