If you want to know where you’ll find some of Johannesburg’s finest golf courses, golf clubs, and prestigious golf estates, you should follow the money and find the most affluent areas, where large properties and new, upmarket developments can be found.
The area which not only replaced central Johannesburg as South Africa’s economic hub, but also became known worldwide as “the richest square mile in Africa”, prophetic words indeed prior to 1978, is called Sandton, a combination of the names of two suburbs in the Sandton area, namely Sandown and Bryanston, which are also home to or adjacent to first-class golf courses.
Almost none of the palatial homes that are seen in Sandown today existed before the establishment of Sandton. It’s thanks to the newer developments that the richest square mile in Africa was created. These developments include Sandton City, the enormous, world-class shopping mall, the office tower blocks, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s new premises, and 5-star hotels that now form the heart of the thriving, affluent Sandton precinct.
Before Sandton’s new developments
Predating all these new developments in Sandton, the properties here included a few smallholdings towards the Rivonia side, and large residential properties with green, tree-filled gardens, and a semi-rural lifestyle and ambience. Beyond the developed suburb of Rosebank and its more sophisticated infrastructure, today’s state-of-the-art Sandton was probably only a distant possibility in the dreams of property developers with aspirations and foresight.
Bryanston, then and now
The original Bryanston component of Sandton is well and long established, although the development and addition of its modern infrastructure is considerably newer and more recent. Many erstwhile Bryanston residents still remember dusty, unpaved roads, veld, and Highveld grassy spaces where one could keep horses and limited livestock on expansive properties that were spread out between Bryanston’s homesteads.
Despite umpteen modern developments and vastly improved urban infrastructure in Bryanston, this lovely, leafy suburb still somehow manages to retain much of its once country-style ambience. Bryanston also remains a sought-after suburb that is popular with a variety of people – young, up-and-coming, career-minded singles and couples, families, older people, and local and international property investors. Investment property values have consistently performed well in Bryanston.
Sandown
The suburb or area of Sandown in Gauteng was named after Sandown, a British town on the Isle of Wight. Our local Sandown has the suburb of Morningside and the Sandton central business hub as its borders, so office and residential developments in Sandown are perfectly positioned and very much in demand with property owners, investors, and tenants.
