Baby boomers and those who are a few years older will remember the Sandton of yesteryear, decades before properties offered for sale in this region were some of the most sought-after, prestigious real estate acquisitions to be had in the entire country.
The scenic seasons in 1950’s Sandton
These baby boomer folks who knew and loved Sandton years before it was known by its present name, will have fond memories of the area’s undulating wide open spaces, covered in typical indigenous Highveld grasses, sometimes stiff with early morning frost and always dry and straw coloured in the crisply cold, but relatively brief winter months.
In summer, hip-high, bright green Highveld grass could be seen waving gently and lazily in the warm breeze, or whipped into a frenzy by the wind that often precedes a Highveld summer rainstorm, announcing the arrival of fat raindrops with thunder, as it rolls across the heavens.
Grasslands would occasionally be interspersed with the denser, darker greenery of trees and bushes, visible from a distance, clearly tracing and defining the courses of the Jukskei River, Braamfontein Spruit, Outspan Spruit, and Sandspruit, which eventually flow into and feed the Crocodile River, some distance beyond Sandton’s borders.
Sandton’s not so distant past
The history and not-so-distant past of the now “new” economic hub of both Johannesburg and South Africa is literally and figuratively rich, equally and very much akin to its renowned description: “the richest square mile in Africa”.
Today, Sandton is once again a suburb of Johannesburg, after re-designation of local governments and the areas within them, following the 1994 democratic elections. Immediately before this latest change of Sandton’s status, Sandton had been an independent town with its own municipality since 1969, when it was named by combining the names of two suburbs in the area – Sandown and Bryanston.
Prior to 1969, the area was run as a peri-urban region, which seemed appropriate at the time, because most of the territory consisted of open veld and smallholdings. The inhabitants enjoyed a semi-rural way of life, living a leisurely country lifestyle on weekends and commuting to work in the Johannesburg CBD on weekdays.

On the outskirts of Sandton, various suburbs retain some country ambience. One still finds numerous properties that incorporate stables being offered for sale, because the “horse” association and interest in the area is strong and lively.
