‘Tis the season again, where Christmas officially comes to town, the festive lights are on, and it’s time to give your home interiors a festive touch.
To prepare for the season, we asked our interior design experts to help you stay on-trend while bringing some Christmas cheer to your home.
Creative table styling
Christmas lunch is the perfect excuse to get your creative juices flowing. No matter what you are serving up this festive season, your table deserves a special touch.
Melissa Hutley from Wickenden Hutley suggests bringing the outside in with a morning of festive creativity with Petersham Nurseries. Learn how to create the perfect Christmas botanical centrepiece using seasonal British grown flowers, foraged garden foliage and forest floor finds. Melissa says it will make for a “stunning mix of traditional and contemporary decorations, suitable for Christmas in town or the countryside table”.
Cosy Christmas
Kirsty Fisher from Lemon & Lime says: “I particularly love large snuggly throws and fur cushions, which are everywhere at the moment and look fabulous in houses this time of year.” Textured cushions are a great way to make the home look like a refuge from the wintery conditions outside, instantly bringing seasonal style.
A scent of Christmas
There is nothing like stepping in from the cold to the warming aroma of a beautifully scented candle. Rebecca Hughes says: “We use a combination of flowers and scented candles to add a subtle finishing touch to a Christmas-styled home. Penhaligon's ‘Christmas Is In The Air’ candle is a perfect combination of fir balsam needles and juniper berry.”
Bringing soft light into the home is key at Christmas, and candles are a great way to achieve that while adding a festive fragrance. Tie in your candle placement to compliment the soft glow of lights on the Christmas tree for a cosy living space.
A bite of Christmas with Fortnum & Mason
Christmas hampers have two fantastic purposes: they contain all sorts of delicious treats, but also have a festive look to add to any home. We recommend that once you have devoured the tempting food inside, place an empty Fortnum & Mason hamper by the fireplace or next to the sofa, packed full of cosy throws and rugs.
Wrap up your Christmas
Wrapping paper is equally as important as decorations during the festive period, so there is no need to stay with the traditional designs and colours.
Danielle Marsh from CID Interieur says: “There are so many on-trend styles so your whole Christmas table can be colour coordinated and luxurious. One of my favourite designs is a white marble-style wrapping paper from Cox & Cox, which really ties in high-end interiors. You can team this with a beautiful copper-effect or black ribbon. Your presents will already be glamorous before they have been opened!”
Laid-back luxury
A key trend this Christmas is about keeping natural and organic. Kate Haynes from EHG Home enjoys a ‘laid-back luxury approach’ at Christmas. “Counteract the chaos of the festivities and embrace the simplicity and beauty of natural decorations,” says Kate. “We love eucalyptus with its minty smell and varying shades of green.”
Perfect decorations
Christmas decorations are a wonderful way to spread cheer in every room of the house. Whether you prefer something more traditional or want to go for a more contemporary look, Liberty London is our one-stop shop for Christmas bauble inspiration. This year, add texture to the Christmas tree to stay on-trend. Fine & Country Interior Design’s favourites are feather decorations.
