An original 17th Century Grade II listed Mill House located in one of South Buckinghamshire's most sought after villages, Little Missenden. Located just over two miles outside Amersham Old Town, The Mill House has the added benefit of the River Misbourne running through it.
Mill House is a rare find indeed; not only is it situated in one of Buckinghamshire's most loved villages, Little Missenden (a South Buckinghamshire mediavel village), but also has the added benefit of the River Misbourne running through the grounds and through the middle of the house! This, together with the old watermill workings form the centre stage piece of the home; that said, they are by no means the most impressive part of the house and grounds.
Double height entrance hallway, with period solid oak staircase leading to first floor galleried landing overlooking the hallway, with the restored old mill gear workings on full display encased in glass running from the ground up through the first floor. A door to the left of the hallway takes you along a viewing platform over where the mill race runs through the house, with a small waterfall in full view. This leads to the utility room and triple garage.
The breathtaking double aspect drawing room has a vaulted ceiling with original oak beams throughout and an impressive stone fireplace with raised hearth, with stunning views over the River Misbourne and beautiful gardens to the rear, and the mill race to the front. A small staircase leads to a spacious playroom which could easily be converted to provide a further bedroom suite.
The ground floor provides considerable living space including a cosy sitting room with inglenook fireplace and a study/home office separated by a second staircase to the first floor. There is a formal dining room with a beamed ceiling and striking Austrian wood burner, leading to the recently extended kitchen and orangery/conservatory. There is a continuation of the Austrian theme here with a large range, hand crafted unit and a central kitchen island with granite worktops. There is a beautifully carved breakfast area and French doors to either side; one set to a patio and one set to a terrace overlooking the Misbourne and the exceptional gardens; ideal for relaxing or for al fresco entertaining.
The remainder of the house has five further bedrooms, with three on the first floor; including the principle (both this and bedroom two having en suite facilities). Stairs to the second floor, which houses two further bedrooms and one bathroom.
The Annexe is separated from the main house by the garage and the river and is a recent refurbishment of the old stables. With its own entrance, this lends itself to being an excellent air b'n'b, or simply lovely guest quarters. It features a vaulted ceiling with exposed wooden beams, two bedrooms, both en suite and one with a steam shower. The living room with kitchenette has double doors directly onto a large patio and sunken hot tub, with a delightful outlook over the gardens and river beyond.
Gardens and Grounds
The mature gardens are spectacular, with both the River Misbourne and the mill race running through them. With 2.6 acres in all, the gardens popularity has been long founded and remains so when the existing owner has kindly opened them to the public under the 'National Garden Scheme'.
The mature gardens are truly delightful, well established and generously stocked by a variety of shrubs and flowers with a pretty Japanese style stone footbridge over the mill race which continues to run on under the house. It also contains an elegant Victorian style greenhouse.
A meadow to the left separates the formal garden from the enclosed tennis court, while to the right there is a copse of trees just beyond the Mishbourne and property boundary.
An ornamental parterre garden has been created with a stone fountain, with the imposing flank wall offering an interesting view of the brickwork 'throughout the ages'. There is also a tall square brick 19th century chimney stack which was built to serve a former steam engine in the outbuilding below, now a boiler room and store, which connects to the garage.
The house is approached from the front via white five bar gates and picket fence leading to plenty of parking as well as turning space for a number of cars in front of the triple garage and visible log stores (former pig sties). The front garden also provides first glance of the lower section of the mill stream which has passed through the mill race and on to the mill pond on the opposite side of the road. This part of the mill race is a frequent spot for ducks, and an occasional swan as well as some large carp and even a few river trout!
Little Missenden is a quintessential English village which lies with the heart of the picturesque Misbourne Valley surrounded by glorious Chiltern countryside, designated and 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' (AONB). There are two very popular country pubs in the village, The Red Lion and The Crown, together with a Saxon church with parts dating back to around 975 AD. There is a nursery school, Little Scholars, and a Church of England primary school. There are many other sedcondary schools locally, including Grammar, State and Private.
The village has been used in many TV programmes over the years, including Midsomer Murders and more recently Disneys Cruella De Ville.
