A guide to Lisbon and Cascais: what to see, do, and where to buy

Portugal is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. We spoke with Fine & Country Portugal to answer all of your questions about what to see, do, and where to buy in Lisbon and Cascais.

Tell us about Cascais and Lisbon. What makes them special?
Once the stomping grounds of some of the greatest seafarers and conquistadors, Lisbon’s rich history is sure to delight any tourist. The wide range of restaurants, bars, and cafes only complements the stunning architecture. You really feel like you’re in another era when you visit the Lisbon Maritime Museum or the Torre de Belem, where ships once passed through on their way to discover new worlds. One of the best ways to discover Lisbon is by touring its seven hills, and experiencing its unique beauty firsthand.

Cascais is a delightful Portuguese fishing town that is located on the western edge of the Lisbon coastline, and is the region’s most popular holiday destination. Historically the town was a favorite with the Portuguese nobility, and today it maintains an elegant blend of traditional Portuguese charm and outstanding tourist facilities. These factors combine to make a great holiday destination and an enjoyable day trip from Lisbon (which is less than 20 minutes away by train). The pretty historic center of Cascais is filled with family owned restaurants, open-air cafes and stylish bars - ideal for relaxing during the hot summer days or socializing late into the night.

What are the most sought-after areas?
Quinta da Marinha and Quinta Patino are two of the most sought-after areas of Lisbon and Cascais. Quinta de Marinha is located in the cosmopolitan Cascais area. The resort and residential development has two 18-hole golf courses as well as four 5 star hotels, as well as an equestrian center, a tennis club and a modern health Club. Quinta Patino is an equally luxurious and secure residential development. Residents have access to a private gym, the gardens, social facilities and tennis courts.

How do you apply for a Golden Visa and what is it?
The Portuguese Golden Visa is an opportunity for international (non-EU) investors to gain residency or citizenship in a European country. In Portugal, the residency is issued if you purchase a property of at least €500.000. By investing €500.000 in a property, the buyer can immediately apply for residency. Normally, it takes 20 days to issue and it applies for all immediate family members.
