From a single project to add value to a home to an award-winning interior design agency, Landmass has grown from strength to strength since it was founded in 1998. Fine & Country Interior Design sit down with one of their newest firms to find out more about the incredible projects Landmass have worked on over the years.
1. What has been the vision for Landmass London since the company was started?
Landmass was the vision of our founder Alan Waxman, who bought a portfolio of buy-to-let properties and realised that he had a talent for improving them and making a profit when he returned them to the market.
The vision has evolved and now our hallmark must be our passion for maximising space and light. Space is a true luxury and we believe in making the best of every property and delivering truly exceptional homes.
2. Tell us about your most challenging project to date.
There have been a few, but one that stands out is a stunning Grade II Listed property. We created a double basement and had to totally reconfigure the floor plans. We had a water feature running through the entire property from top to bottom, which was difficult to configure. We also faced restrictions on mechanical digging equipment, so we had to get creative. Eventually, we resorted to manually digging out the basement.
3. What is the most unusual client request you have had?
We once had a client obsessed with having total darkness when they slept, right down to the tiny LED lights on the light switches. Of course, we made it work.
4. What is the most important thing an interior designer can contribute to a client’s home?
Listening to our clients is so important. Understanding our clients is the key to make sure we can create a home of their dreams.
5. Where does your design inspiration come from?
Our inspiration comes from many places including our work environment, the history of an area or building, and of course the client’s passions and preferences.
6. How do you approach each new client’s home and their expectations?
Managing client’s expectations is incredibly important. At Landmass, we guide the client through the phases of work and manage all the permissions to make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. We approach each home as a clean slate and with an open mind. We listen, interpret, advise and often challenge to make sure our clients understand certain processes.
7. What is your next project?
Our next project will be creating a cool, sophisticated urban bachelor pad from a chintzy, fire-damaged city flat. We can’t wait to start it!
8. If someone reading this was about to begin their own home redesign project, what would be your best advice to them?
Call me! Sometimes it is best to speak to someone rather than dropping an email.
9. Lastly, what is the one piece of advice you wish someone had told you?
Always measure twice.
