The three villages of Northowram, Shibden and Shelf are located to the North East of Halifax. The villages benefit from being within easy reach of Halifax town centre, but also the main routes to Bradford or the motorway at Chain Bar (M62 J26).

In the private system Rishworth School and Hipperholme Grammar both offer through schooling options taking children from age 3 through to 18 and 16 respectively, there are also a prep school at The Gleddings, in Skircoat Green, taking children from ages 3 to 11. The state schools locally operate a selective admissions system with two grammar schools, Crossley Heath and North Halifax Grammar using the 11+ results to determine entry.
Shibden Hall is famously the former home of Anne Lister whose diaries formed the basis of the BBC/HBO drama Gentleman Jack. The house is now a museum and park land that surrounds it boasts a boating lake and small railway.
