Ambleside Area Guide
One of the best bases for exploring the Lake District, the picturesque town of Ambleside is popular with both tourist and residents alike and marks the head of Lake Windermere. Ambleside has an active community and is a great place for families. Every year it celebrates its Rushbearing Festival, a custom that dates back to the days when the earthen floor of the church was strewn with rushes for warmth and cleanliness. There is the Ambleside Sports, held every August, is one of the most well known and well attended traditional countryside sports fairs in Cumbria. It is one of the few places to view the famous Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling. The bustling town centre offers something for those of all ages from independent shops to gastro dining and there is even a choice of two cinemas.
Attractions
A short walk from the centre of the village leads to Stock Ghyll Force, a spectacular 70 foot waterfall.
The 17th Century Bridge House over Stock Ghyll beck is one of the most photographed scenes in Lakeland owned by the National Trust.
Just a short walk from Ambleside, the National Trust owned Stagshaw Gardens cover about 8 acres, and have fine collections of rhododendrons, azaleas and ericaceous trees and shrubs.
The Armitt Museum on Rydal Rd is a purpose built home for a collection of books, manuscripts, water-colours, archaeological remains, geological specimens and assorted paraphernalia. It also houses an area dedicated to Beatrix Potter.

Education
Ambleside has a wonderful primary school focused on outside learning. For those of secondary age there is the Lake School and the private Windermere School located within driving distance.
Commuting
Located along the A591 at the head of Lake Windermere, Ambleside is well positioned for those wanting to enjoy the best of the National Park. It also means there is easy access onto the M6 along the A591 and to the Windermere train station that access the direct lines to Manchester and London available from Oxenholme train station.
