‘Picture perfect and quintessentially English.’

Welcome to Little Thatch

Charming in every way

Little Thatch could easily be used as an image on a countryside calendar or a traditional jigsaw. It has all the delightful features that spring to mind when ‘thatched cottage’ is mentioned but this is not an imaginary vision, Little Thatch is for real. Here, we have a beautiful property that has been lovingly owned and nurtured by its present owners, in the prime location of Fairefield Crescent, Glenfield.

Nestled alongside other bespoke, residential properties, this house exudes traditional quality and taste. This is a charming three bedroom detached property set in 0.37 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. From the outset, this residence declares itself a cottage, with all the features pertaining to that description. Little Thatch has whitewashed exterior walls, a brick chimney, shuttered black and white diamond leaded windows and the essential element, a thatched roof over the entire house, bay windows and garage. Set back from the road, this house was built in 1939 and has only had two owners: the present ones having lived here for 49 years. Through their loving care, it has gained a reputation for its well-tended grounds, winning competitions and establishing itself as an established feature of the locality.

You are assured of a warm welcome

The cottage is a quintessentially English home. Little Thatch sits behind a mature front garden of trees, lawn and shrubbery. The wide, five barred, front gate opens onto a randomly paved drive that sweeps to the side of the property, providing private parking for several vehicles and entry into the garage to the right. Passing under the thatched entrance, the carpeted hallway is capital L shaped. Doors lead from it to the living room, stairs to the first floor, downstairs bathroom and kitchen. The staircase, which is positioned in the middle of the cottage, has a large cupboard built beneath it to maximise storage. There are two generously sized reception rooms in this property. The largest is the living room.

The living room has a large feature bay window and rustic brick fireplace. It is a charming room, full of light, spacious and airy, with views over the garden. The dark exposed ceiling beams promote the characteristics of an English home of maturity and character. Here, the traditional features work wonderfully together to create a room full of charm and substance. Close your eyes and imagine the sun pouring through the windows or the prospect of curling up with a good book in front of the fire in this cosy retreat. Bliss!

A feast for your eyes

If we now walk back into the hall, we can turn into the kitchen. The kitchen itself is practical, full of quality storage units and appliances, yet large enough for stools to be slotted underneath the bench for informal dining. It is fitted with cream Shaker style panelled cupboards beneath and above contrasting work tops, and fitted with black wrought iron style handles and knobs that feature on the doors and window latches throughout the property. Some of the cabinetry is primarily for display purposes and features the diamond glass pattern found on the exterior windows, while under cabinet lighting adds an additional glow of light. There is a fitted cooker with separate grill, gas hob, extraction hood and dishwasher. The kitchen is wall tiled and has a hard floor covering to compliment the neutral shading of the tiles. It also leads to and combines with, the dining room, creating a flexible and adaptable space.

The dining room is carpeted, generously proportioned and can easily house a formal dining room table with additional furniture. It is a light room with a distinctive character, primarily due to its shape, which incorporates a bay window and French doors. The French doors open out onto the patio and through which a tempting view of the extensive gardens can be gained. The eye is drawn to look beyond the expanse of lawn, to flower beds, shrubbery and a vista of trees at the furthest point away from the cottage. This means that this home is perfect for larger scale events and has been designed to maximise the flow of family or guests to move unhindered, while mealtimes, conversation and hospitality flow from kitchen, to dining room, to patio or beyond. (The garden has previously been used as a charity venue to host open garden events.) Whether enjoying the cosiness of this space on a cold winter’s night or opening out the doors to facilitate the lovely private garden for summer entertaining, this room is a winner.

Once back into the kitchen again, a side door opens directly next door to the thatched garage, which runs parallel to the side of the cottage but is hidden from view behind a side gate. This building has been converted to incorporate three separate rooms and besides a space for a vehicle, there is a utility room and a laundry room with sink, and plumbing for a washing machine and vented tumble drier.

Finally, on this ground level, the family bathroom is at the front of the cottage. It is wall and floor tiled, and consists of a white suite with hand shower over the bath.

Upstairs and then outside

If we now return to the hall, the carpeted staircase with white handrail, leads upstairs to the generous landing and three bedrooms. The primary bedroom has views to the front and side of the cottage and as with all of the rooms on this upper floor, is carpeted and equipped with ample storage; matching white cupboards and wardrobes. Each of the bedrooms provide views into the front or rear gardens.

There is also a generous shower room consisting of a white three piece shower suite and a linen cupboard, providing additional storage.

From the outset Little Thatch was designed with the objective of creating a beautifully traditional cottage, under the artistry of a thatched roof: cool in summer and warm in winter. The private grounds surrounding the property need to be investigated to be fully appreciated as there are lovely walk ways to discover, a summer house to relax in and a majestic weeping willow to mention just a few of the delights in store. This is a haven for wild birds, wild life and, undoubtedly, will become a little piece of heaven on earth for its new owners!

LOCALITY

Glenfield is a large village in a region known as the East Midlands, in the county of Leicestershire. The Midlands are essentially central to everything in England: airports, motorways and train stations are easily accessible. For example, the East Midlands airport is only 14 miles away, London is approximately 102 miles away and it is possible to visit the seaside for a day trip! The M1, M69 and M6 maximise the potential for travel by road from this central location. The villages of Groby, Kirby Muxloe and Anstey are close by.

Glenfield is on the North West fringe of the city and in the Blaby district of Leicester. During parliamentary elections Glenfield is counted within the Charnwood constituency. The headquarters of the Leicestershire County Council and Leicestershire’s Fire and Rescue Service are located in Glenfield. It also has the Glenfield Hospital and the Glenfield Sports Ground, which offers an array of courses and activities. Built in 1877, St Peters is the local parish church and there is also a Wesleyan Chapel in the vicinity.

The original small village of Glenfield was known as Clanfelde and was mentioned in the 1086 Doomsday Book. Today, new natural areas called Clanfelde Hills have been created to commemorate this name. The village of Glenfield expanded notably after the 1930s and continues to appeal to the community through a wide selection of sport, education and leisure amenities. There are an array of shops, restaurants, cafes and parks, with the additional benefits of reaching the city of Leicester by public or private transport. There are many rural delights within a walking distance.

The local council is keen to conserve and reintroduce green belt natural areas for the public to enjoy. There is a wildlife friendly meadow and arboretum branching from the A50, while a cycle track along the Rothley Road called Brookside Meadows leads from the centre of the village and into open countryside over a new purpose built bridge.

The locality provides many schools across the educational age range; nursery, primary, secondary, including private establishments offering bordering facilities. The Office for Standards in Education - OFSTED – is best researched to provide a comprehensive review of currently rated standards of practice.
