Fine & Country Marlborough & Devizes - Area Information
Marlborough is an historic and characterful market town situated in Wiltshire and in the heart of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town and the surrounding area are steeped in history, dating back to Neolithic times.
Devizes is also one of Wiltshire’s most important market towns. Lying south-west of Marlborough, and at the western edge of the Vale of Pewsey, it formed originally around an 11th Century Norman Castle. There are a huge number of beautiful period and architecturally interesting buildings in Devizes, including over 500 listed properties.
The surrounding areas are full of picturesque Wiltshire villages, including many beautiful properties from grand manor houses to picture-postcard thatched cottages. The villages of Ramsbury, Manton, Lockeridge, Burbage, Avebury, Great Bedwyn and Pewsey all surround Marlborough, with the latter two having a direct train line into London Paddington, making the area popular with commuters. The Pewsey Vale, which is between Marlborough and Devizes again comprises many beautiful villages and hamlets including Woodborough, Bishops Cannings, All Cannings, Market Lavington, Stanton St. Bernard, Alton Barnes and Oare.
As well as offering some of the most stunning countryside, Wiltshire is the ideal setting for raising a family with excellent independent schools provision including (at secondary level) the famous Marlborough College where the current Duchess of Cambridge studied; St. Mary’s Girls School in Calne; and Dauntsey’s School at Market Lavington. Primary provision is similarly excellent in the independent schools sector, with St. Margaret’s Preparatory in Calne and St. Francis in Pewsey. There are numerous outstanding state schools in the area too, including Woodborough Primary School and St. Johns Academy in Marlborough to highlight just two.
Both Marlborough and Devizes boast a fantastic and diverse range of shopping amenities in addition to numerous pubs and restaurants. Marlborough boasts the second widest high-street in Britain which hosts the twice weekly market, and benefits from many independent and national retailers. There are a plethora of dining options in Marlborough too, including Rick Stein, Pino’s Italian, Dan’s at the Crown, Pizza Express, ASK, Bunces Café and Polly Tea Rooms.
